Ruth Suckow, one of Iowa’s premier authors, was born in this house in Hawarden in 1892. The family lived in Hawarden until 1898. In the early 2000’s, the Historical Society acquired the house and moved it from Central Ave to Calliope Village. The house was in very poor condition (both inside and out) and took several years of work to restore it. Most of the Ruth Suckow articles in the house were given to the society by the Ruth Suckow Memorial Association.
Ruth is the author of several short stories and 13 books. The 1920s were the most successful years of her career, but she wrote all of her life about ordinary farmers, small-town Iowans, and independent women.
